(English version below)
Oktober 2026.
Was tun bei Problemen?
I received emails about reissuing my SSL certificate: What do I need to do?
At the time of issuance, there was an administrative issue involving your SSL certificate, and industry standards require us to resolve it. Therefore, we are reissuing your certificate. We are sorry for the confusion and any inconvenience this may cause.
If you have received emails or SMS on this topic, you will find the most important information here, along with the latest status and answers to common questions. Depending on your hosting product and how you use your SSL certificate, different steps are required.
First things first: What do I need to do now?
Customers received an email from Host Europe with the subject line "URGENT ACTION MAY BE NEEDED: Reissuance of your SSL certificate." This email is your signal that action may be needed. Please follow the instructions provided in this email.
Replacement deadline: 21 October 2026. The existing SSL certificates are expected to expire at 9pm CEST on 21 October 2026 and must be replaced with the newly issued version before this deadline. If your certificate is not successfully replaced by this deadline, your website is likely to experience downtime. You may need to take action to ensure your reissued certificates are installed successfully – please see the further information below.
We have also posted a service status notice in the KIS, which will keep you informed of the latest updates: https://kis.hosteurope.de/allgemeines/stoerungen/
How can I check whether my certificate is still affected?
The easiest way is to use our check tool: Go to https://ssltools.secureserver.net/cert-check and enter your domain name. The tool will show you whether the certificate currently installed on your website is affected by the issue. Only if this shows that you are still affected further action is required. Otherwise you can ignore other automated communication about this topic.
Alternatively, in your browser: Open your website using https://, click the padlock icon to the left of the address bar and display the certificate. Your certificate is still affected if the issuer is "Starfield" and the certificate was issued before 15 October 2026. In this case, it still needs to be replaced with the reissued certificate – please see the further information below.
Tip: If you have only just installed a new certificate, reload the page or open it in a private window. Otherwise, your browser may still display the previous certificate.
Why does my certificate need to be reissued?
At the time of issuance, there was an administrative issue involving your SSL certificate, and industry standards require us to resolve it. We are therefore reissuing your certificate. We have no indication that this issue affected in any way the protection of data sent between your website and its visitors, or the security of website connections. However, SSL industry rules nevertheless require us to revoke the certificate. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Is the email I've already received spam?
No. The email was intentionally sent to you by the certificate issuer.
How should the certificate be replaced?
That depends on which product you use with the SSL certificate:
You are using Classic Web Hosting?
- Normally, you do not need to do anything. We will attempt to reissue and install your SSL certificate automatically.
- If you have not previously had to manage your SSL certificate manually, this should continue to be the case.
- As a precaution, you can check your website. If the new reissued certificate (once available) does not install automatically, you will need to install it manually. If you have any questions, please contact our support team through your KIS.
You are using cPanel Hosting?
- If you have already enabled AutoSSL, you do not need to do anything – the certificates are managed automatically.
- If you are not yet using AutoSSL, you can switch to it for fully automated SSL management.
- Otherwise, you will need to install the new reissued certificate manually in cPanel (once available).
You have manually validated and installed your certificate so far?
- You will need to install the new reissued certificate manually again (once available).
- You will be able to download the new certificate from your KIS and install it on your system.
- The validation and installation process will be the same as the procedure you followed during the initial setup.
You are installing your certificate in IIS on Windows?
Additional steps are required when installing the certificate on an IIS web server (Internet Information Services) on Windows. In certain configurations, new certificates may not work as expected after installation. One possible cause is a known issue with how IIS handles certificates that have multiple validation paths. This applies to the reissued certificates.
To resolve the issue, proceed as follows:
- Provide the certificate file: Download the additional certificate file starfield_r1.zip and unzip it on the server running IIS, for example to the desktop.
- Install the certificate: Right-click the certificate file and select "Install Certificate". In the Certificate Import Wizard, select "Local Machine" as the store location and complete the installation.
- Reassign the certificate: Open IIS Manager and reassign your SSL certificate to the affected website.
- Restart the web server service: Fully restart the IIS web server service for the changes to take effect.
You have already cancelled your SSL certificate?
- You can ignore all emails concerning the reissue.
- As you no longer require the certificate, no further action is necessary.
- The reissue only affects you if you still use active certificates.
When do you need to take action?
- Customers with Classic Web Hosting or cPanel with AutoSSL: Usually no action required. As a precaution, please check your website anyway.
- Customers with manual installation: Install the new certificate promptly and before the deadline of 21 October 2026, 9pm CEST to avoid interruptions.
- If you have questions about installation or download, please contact our support team.
Where can I retrieve reissued certificates?
- For each new certificate, you will see an additional entry in your certificate list in the KIS (https://kis.hosteurope.de/administration/ssl/). You can recognise the new entry because it is labelled "Reissue". The previous certificate is shown as "Revoked".
- If a status other than "Issued" is displayed there, you need to take action and validate the certificate. For this purpose, you have received a code from the certificate issuer, which you need to add to your DNS. This process is the same as for the original issuance (https://www.hosteurope.de/faq/software-services/ssl-zertifikate/validierung).
- Once the new SSL certificate has been issued, we will notify you by email.
- In the KIS, it will be marked as "Issued" once it is ready to be installed. You can also recognise it by a validity start date of 15 October 2026 or later.
What to do in case of problems?
- If an invalid certificate is unexpectedly still displayed on your website, first check in your KIS under "Product Admin > SSL" whether the new SSL certificate has already been integrated.
- For further questions or problems, please feel free to create a support request via your KIS.
