Das CA/Browser Forum – ein Zusammenschluss aller großen Zertifizierungsstellen und Browser-Hersteller wie Apple, Google, Mozilla und Microsoft – hat beschlossen, die maximale Gültigkeitsdauer von SSL-Zertifikaten schrittweise zu verkürzen. Ab März 2026 wird weltweit keinem SSL-Zertifikat mit einer Gültigkeitsdauer von mehr als 200 Tagen mehr vertraut. Diese Änderung gilt für alle Arten von SSL-Zertifikaten und betrifft sämtliche Zertifizierungsstellen. Host Europe muss auf diese Änderungen reagieren und stellt rechtzeitig vor März 2026 den Verkauf von 1-Jahres-SSL-Zertifikaten ein. Stattdessen werden wir 6-Monats-SSL-Zertifikate anbieten. Ab März 2026 wird keinem neuausgestellten SSL-Zertifikat mit einer Gültigkeitsdauer von mehr als 200 Tagen mehr vertraut. Alle Arten von SSL-Zertifikaten sind davon betroffen.

Wie reagiert Host Europe auf die geänderte Gültigkeitsdauer von SSL-Zertifikaten?

• Rechtzeitig vor März 2026 wird der Verkauf von 1-Jahres-SSL-Zertifikaten eingestellt. Stattdessen werden wir 6-Monats-SSL-Zertifikate anbieten. Einmal ausgestellt kann das Zertifikat auch nach März 2026 installiert und normal genutzt werden.
• Es wird keine 1-Jahres-SSL-Verlängerungen mehr geben. Es werden bei einer Verlängerung nur noch 6-Monats-SSL-Zertifikate ausgestellt.
• Der monatliche Preis bleibt unverändert und wird bei jeder Neuausstellung für den jeweiligen Zeitraum berechnet. Bei inklusiven Zertifikaten ändert sich für Sie nichts.
• Unsere Zertifizierungsstelle (Starfield) wird ab März 2026 nur noch Zertifikate mit einer maximalen Gültigkeitsdauer von 200 Tagen validieren. Diese technische Obergrenze spielt für Sie als Kunde keine Rolle – Sie erhalten ein 6-Monats-Zertifikat.

Ausblick: Weitere Verkürzungen geplant

Das CA/Browser Forum hat bereits weitere Reduzierungen der Gültigkeitsdauer beschlossen. Ab März 2027 wird die maximale Gültigkeitsdauer auf 100 Tage verkürzt, ab März 2029 sogar auf nur noch 47 Tage. Diese Entwicklung zeigt: Die Zukunft gehört der automatisierten Zertifikatsverwaltung.

Automatische Zertifikate bei Host Europe

Gut zu wissen: Wenn Sie unser klassisches Webhosting, cPanel Webhosting oder einen Virtual Server nutzen, müssen Sie sich keine Sorgen machen. Beim klassischen Webhosting werden Ihre Zertifikate automatisch eingebunden. Beim cPanel Webhosting erfolgt die automatische Verlängerung über Let's Encrypt. Bei Virtual Servern kann dies ebenfalls über Let's Encrypt konfiguriert werden. Ihre Zertifikate werden automatisch erneuert – unabhängig davon, wie kurz die Gültigkeitsdauer in Zukunft sein wird.

How long do SSL certificates remain valid?

The CA/Browser Forum – a consortium of all major certificate authorities and browser vendors such as Apple, Google, Mozilla, and Microsoft – has decided to gradually reduce the maximum validity period of SSL certificates. From March 2026, no SSL certificate with a validity period of more than 200 days will be trusted worldwide. This change applies to all types of SSL certificates and affects all certificate authorities. Host Europe must respond to these changes and will discontinue the sale of 1-year SSL certificates before March 2026. Instead, we will offer 6-month SSL certificates. From March 2026, no newly issued SSL certificate with a validity period of more than 200 days will be trusted. All types of SSL certificates are affected.

How is Host Europe responding to the changed validity period of SSL certificates?

• The sale of 1-year SSL certificates will be discontinued before March 2026. Instead, we will offer 6-month SSL certificates. Once issued, the certificate can still be installed and used normally after March 2026.
• There will be no more 1-year SSL renewals. Only 6-month SSL certificates will be issued upon renewal.
• The monthly price remains unchanged and will be charged upon each renewal for the respective period. For included certificates, nothing changes for you.
• Our certificate authority (Starfield) will only validate certificates with a maximum validity period of 200 days from March 2026. This technical limit is not relevant for you as a customer – you will receive a 6-month certificate.

Outlook: Further reductions planned

The CA/Browser Forum has already approved further reductions in validity periods. From March 2027, the maximum validity period will be reduced to 100 days, and from March 2029 to just 47 days. This development shows: the future belongs to automated certificate management.

Automatic certificates at Host Europe

Good to know: If you use our classic web hosting, cPanel web hosting, or a Virtual Server, you don't need to worry. With classic web hosting, your certificates are automatically integrated. With cPanel web hosting, automatic renewal is handled via Let's Encrypt. With Virtual Servers, this can also be configured via Let's Encrypt. Your certificates will be renewed automatically – regardless of how short the validity period becomes in the future.
