SQLSTATE[HY000] [1524] Plugin 'mysql_native_password' is not loaded
oder
Plugin 'mysql_native_password' is not loaded
Ursache:
Unknown column 'X' in field list | veraltete SQL-Syntax | CMS/Plugin/ Theme aktualisieren! |
Syntax error near 'X' | reserviertes Keyword | CMS/Plugin/ Theme aktualisieren.

General Questions about the MySQL Upgrade
What is MySQL 8.4 and why is it being updated?
MySQL 8.4 is a Long-Term Support (LTS) version of the MySQL database system. "LTS" means that this version will officially receive security and bug-fix updates until April 2032.
The previous version MySQL 8.0 reached its end-of-life in April 2026 – meaning the manufacturer will no longer provide security updates after that date. To keep your data and your website secure, we are performing the upgrade to MySQL 8.4.
When will the MySQL upgrade take place?
The upgrade will be carried out across the entire Classic Hosting Platform starting October 12, 2026. You will be informed by email approximately 1 week in advance about the maintenance window scheduled for your package/server. To minimise the impact on your projects, the upgrade is currently planned to be performed at night.
Why are you receiving this information now?
Older applications in particular may experience incompatibilities after a MySQL update. Therefore, please check the version status of your application now and whether the current version as well as newer versions are compatible with MySQL 8.4. If necessary, carry out the appropriate updates to your application before October 12, 2026.
Do I need to do anything myself?
Yes, you should take action and check your applications and websites. If you are unable to do so or cannot perform the check yourself, please contact your website administrator.
Please check the following before the upgrade date:
- ✅ Is your CMS (WordPress, Joomla, etc.) up to date? If not, please perform an update before the upgrade date. Helpful information can be found in the Compatibility Questions section.
I am using very old software – can the MySQL upgrade be postponed?
We strongly recommend updating to a compatible version before the upgrade rather than postponing it. Outdated software poses significant security risks.
The MySQL upgrade cannot be postponed on our end.
Will my data be deleted during the upgrade and will a backup be created?
We do not delete your data. The database upgrade only affects the software (the database server), not your stored data.
We create a backup of all databases on the server prior to the upgrade as part of the announced maintenance and retain it for a period of time.
Will there be any downtime?
To minimise the impact on your projects, the upgrade is currently planned to be performed at night.
Depending on the number, size and scope of the databases on the server system, we generally expect downtime of approximately 1 to 2 hours.
Which contracts/products are affected?
Please check our email notification. We have listed the relevant contracts/products there. The list contains all products that can technically use databases. The maintenance will take place for all listed products, regardless of whether databases have been set up in the KIS or not.
Compatibility Questions
Is my CMS compatible with MySQL 8.4?
| CMS | Compatible from version |
| WordPress | Latest version recommended – Core is compatible, check Plugins & Themes! |
| Joomla | from 6.x |
| Typo3 | from 13.x |
| Drupal | from 10.x |
| Shopware | from 6.6.x |
| PrestaShop | from 9 |
| Contao | from 5.x |
Tip: Always keep all components (CMS core, plugins, themes) up to date – this not only protects against compatibility issues, but also against security vulnerabilities.
I use WordPress – what do I need to be aware of?
The WordPress core is compatible with MySQL 8.4 as long as it is kept up to date. However, the most common issue with WordPress involves third-party plugins and themes.
Our recommendation:
- Update WordPress Core to the latest version
- Update all plugins and themes
- Thoroughly test your website after the upgrade
- In case of errors: deactivate plugins and test which plugin is causing the issue
Questions about Technical Errors after the Upgrade
My website is showing a database error after the upgrade – what should I do?
The most common error after the upgrade looks like this:
SQLSTATE[HY000] [1524] Plugin 'mysql_native_password' is not loaded
or
Plugin 'mysql_native_password' is not loaded
Cause:
- Your database user is still using the old authentication method mysql_native_password, which is disabled by default in MySQL 8.4.
- In the course of the upgrade, however, MySQL 8.4 is set to a compatibility mode so that this error does not occur. If the error still appears in individual cases, proceed according to the solution explained below.
Solution:
- There are only a few database users: Reset the password for the relevant database user in the KIS.
- There are a large number of database users and resetting the password in the KIS would be too time-consuming: Please feel free to contact support via an outage report in the KIS. Please note, that working on these tickets will take a while, so please check, of there is a way to set the password by yourself. In this case you do not have to wait for customer support answer.
- If the error message continues to appear after resetting the password, please contact support via an outage report in the KIS and provide both the relevant website and the linked database.
What other error messages can occur after the MySQL upgrade?
| Error message | Cause | Solution |
Unknown column 'X' in field list | outdated SQL syntax | Update CMS/Plugin/Theme If the error persists, please contact the software developer. |
Syntax error near 'X' | reserved keyword | Update CMS/Plugin/Theme. If the error persists, please contact the software developer. |
| Website does not load / blank page | general database connection error | Check PHP error log |
| Database login (connection to database) does not work | various possible causes, e.g. incorrect login credentials or a system issue after the upgrade | Reset the password for the relevant database user in the KIS. |
